Tiny Desk Live performance : NPR

Lainey Wilson took a protracted, winding path to country-music stardom, starting with a highschool stint as a Hannah Montana impersonator. That path led the Louisiana native to a Grammy for greatest nation album earlier this 12 months — for her terrific 2022 breakthrough, Bell Backside Nation — and it continues with Whirlwind, which dropped Friday.

Simply days earlier than the brand new album’s launch, Wilson took one more victory lap on the Tiny Desk, the place she carried out three songs from Whirlwind earlier than closing with the primary single from Bell Backside Nation, “Coronary heart Like a Truck.” Although she and her band opened the set with two killer songs about romantic devotion, the present’s grabbiest moments — and those likeliest to go viral — got here in the course of the irreverent “Ring Finger,” a kiss-off tune for the ages. (How we made it to 2024 and not using a banger containing the phrases “I bought the ring / He bought the finger” must stay a thriller.)

The entire deeply charming set introduced Wilson as a star with endurance. She’ll keep a presence on the Tiny Desk, too: She left us her hat for safekeeping.
